It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
With the kids that were yelling…
But I’m busy telling…
I’m of good cheer…
‘Cause it’s time for the start of the new school year…
Do you have a favorite time of the year? Does your heart start to pitter patter when you smell things, hear things, taste things that remind you of that time? I do. It’s fall. It’s always been fall. Probably because my birthday is in September. Ever since my first fall day 29 years ago, (what? I’m writing this so I can write whatever age I want) my heart starts that pitter pattering about August 1. I imagine pumpkins, pencils, leaves falling and new notebook paper, new book bags and first day of school outfits and cornstalks.
Nothing ruins that more than 90 degree days and 100% humidity.
But not this morning.
I’m freezing.
It’s 40 degrees.
Our bedroom window was open.
And the fan on.
Suffice it to say, for the first time in months, the heat was switched on. I’m sure we’ll put the A/C back on next week. It’s Chicago which means it’s inevitable.
I wish I could say on August 1 I was dreaming of this day but I’ve been a little preoccupied. Remember – storms, tree thru roof, tree on car, children, children, children, children, wedding, homecoming, school, meetings, doctor appointments, birthday, birthday, birthday, birthday…
But, I’m back on track now.
Last week I heard the cottonwood leaves blowing on the street, bluegrass music from Nickel Creek, and Mr. Wilson up and blowing – I mean sucking up – leaves at 8 am. I smelled apples, fire smoke, and cinnamon raisin bread. I tasted pumpkin donuts (which Steve forced down my throat making me sick. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.) and spice cake baked by that same AWESOME husband. I’ve seen maple trees beginning their transformation from green to yellow to orange to red. Ahhhh. It’s here! Fall!
With that said, I pulled (I mean Steve and the boys pulled) the bins of fall decorations out of the attic. I put away the summer decorations on the front porch and declared to all who enter, I’m celebrating that most wonderful time of the year.
To All … Happy Fall
